Box Score 2 Claremont, Calif. — In the first game, the #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated Pomona-Pitzer 18-8 at Haldeman Pool. The Waves took an early four-goal advantage after the first period and never looked back, leading to a victory against the Sagehens.
Then against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pepperdine took a three-goal advantage into the third quarter. The Waves shut out the Stags in the third period and took a six-goal lead into the fourth quarter. From there, Pepperdine cruised to a 13-7 win.
BIG WAVES
- Junior center Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) had two hat-tricks on the day.
- Senior attacker Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) had six goals on the day including a four-goal game against Pomona-Pitzer.
- Freshman center Chase Wilson (New York, N.Y./Greenwich HS) had a hat-trick in the first game against Pomona-Pitzer, while also tacking on another goal in the contest against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
GAME #1 RECAP
The Waves took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by
Christian Hosea. The Sagehens countered with a goal of their own to tie the game, 1-1. Pepperdine then scored four times in a row to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.
Pomona-Pitzer found the back of the net to open the second period, but back-to-back goals by
Jon Carcarey (Lompoc, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) and
Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) increased the Waves advantage to 7-2. Hosea then scored the Waves third-straight goal and picked up a hat-trick in the game to increase their lead to 8-2.
Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) and Csapo both found the back of the net late in the second period, but a few goals by the Sagehens had the Waves up 11-6 going into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer opened up the third quarter with a couple goals, but
Matty Walsh countered with a pair of goals to put Pepperdine in front 13-8.
Chase Wilson (New York, N.Y./Greenwich HS) then found the back of the net to increase the Waves advantage to 14-8 heading into the final period.
After a few scoreless minutes to start the fourth quarter, Hosea scored his fourth goal of the game to increase Pepperdine's lead, 15-8. Wilson then scored on the Waves next possession to give them an eight goal advantage, 16-8. Pepperdine tacked on a couple more goals and ultimately won the contest 18-8.
Pepperdine was led by Hosea who had four goals in the game, and a total of eight Waves scored in the contest.

GAME #2 RECAP
Clay Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) got the Waves on the board with an early goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Stags countered with a goal of their own, but back-to-back goals by Hosea and Brosnan put Pepperdine up 3-1. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps then scored again, but a late goal by Walsh gave the Waves a 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Wilson increased Pepperdine's lead to 5-2 after he found the back of the net to open up the second quarter. The Stags were able to get a goal back off a powerplay to cut the Waves' lead to 5-3. Hosea then tallied his second goal of the game to put Pepperdine back in front by three, 6-3. Both teams were scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter and the Waves took a three-goal advantage into halftime.
After a slow start to the second half by both teams,
Anthony D'Ambra (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and
Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) both found the back of the cage to increase Pepperdine's lead to 8-3. Kaneko then scored with five seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Waves a 9-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened the final period with back-to-back goals to cut Pepperdine's lead to 9-5. Walsh then scored a goal off a beautiful assist from Gal to increase the Waves advantage to 10-5. Walsh,
Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) and Brosnan all scored in the period as the Waves closed out the game with a 13-7 victory.
Walsh led the way with three goals, and a total of eight Waves scored in the contest.
