Box Score Los Angeles, Calif. – In a game that saw eight ties, the #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team (12-3) took undefeated #1 UCLA to a sudden death period in triple overtime, but the Waves fell 10-9 at Spieker Aquatics Center.
The Waves held the Bruins high-powered offense to a season-low 10 goals on a .313 shooting percentage.
BIG WAVES
- Graduate driver Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) had a pair of goals along with two assists for a total of four points.
- Sophomore attacker Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) found the back of the net twice, while also picking up an assist.
- Sophomore attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) also picked up a pair of goals and tacked on an assist.
GAME RECAP
After a scoreless first few minutes,
Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) put the Waves in front 1-0 as he found the back of the net off an assist from
Ryan Brosnan. Brosnan then scored a goal of his own on Pepperdine's next possession to increase the lead to 2-0. UCLA answered with a pair of goals to tie the game at two-all heading into the second quarter.
The Bruins opened the second period with a goal to take a 3-2 advantage.
Sandor Gal then found the back of the cage to tie the game for the second time, 3-3. Both teams were held scoreless for over four minutes until
Adam Csapo scored a goal with two seconds left in the half to give the Waves a 4-3 lead at the break.
UCLA opened the third quarter with a goal to tie the game for the third time, 4-4.
Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) then countered with a goal of his own off Brosnan's second assist of the game to put Pepperdine in front 5-4. The Bruins were able to score back-to-back goals to take a 6-5 advantage. Gal then evened the game up 6-6 as he found the back of the net thanks to a beautiful assist from Hosea. UCLA was able to score a goal late in the period to take a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) opened the fourth quarter with a goal to tie the game for the sixth time, 7-7. The Bruins countered with a goal of their own to take an 8-7 lead with 4:25 left to play. Csapo then found the back of the cage to tie the game 8-8 with 3:14 remaining. After a scoreless last three minutes, Pepperdine and UCLA headed into overtime.
After stellar defense by both squads, the game was still knotted up eight-all at the end of the first overtime period.
Csapo connected with Brosnan who scored a goal with less than a minute left to put the Waves up 9-8 in the second overtime period. The Bruins then knotted the game up at nine-all on the next possession. A clutch save by
Antonio Knez (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) sent the game into a third overtime.
In the sudden death period, both teams came up empty on their first couple possessions, but UCLA scored the game winning goal on their third possession of the quarter to win the game 10-9.
