Beach Volleyball Alumni Make Splash in the AVP

MALIBU, Calif. — Alumni from the Pepperdine beach volleyball team have been making a splash in the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) recently, including a pair of notable wins from Kelley Kolinske and Corinne Quiggle.

At the AVP Denver, Kolinske (nèe Larsen) earned her fifth AVP win, and Quiggle captured her first ever AVP title in Hermosa Beach. Quiggle will also represent Team USA at the Pan American Games after winning the qualifier on June 13-14 in Manhattan Beach. Corinne Quiggle

Six other Pepperdine alumni have repped the blue and orange across the nation at AVP tournaments. Of the six Waves alumni competing at the AVP Tour Denver Open, five advanced to the quarterfinals, three went to the semifinals, and Kolinske finished first. Quiggle won the AVP Pro Series Hermosa Beach Open after fellow five Waves also competed, with four advancing to quarterfinals and two reaching the semifinal round.

Kolinske partnered with Hailey Howard, a USC alum, took home the AVP Tour Series Denver Open at The Island on Sunday, July 2. As the top-seeded pair, they competed against fellow Pepperdine alumni, Madison Shields and partner Lydia Smith in a hard-fought three-set win (21-16, 15-21, 15-11) to advance to the quarterfinals where they would face two-seeded duo and Waves alum, Deahna Kraft and her partner Zana Muno. Kolinske and Howard picked up seven-straight wins in the tournament play to advance to the championship round.

Kolinske and Howard faced sixth-seeded pair, Toni Rodriguez and Savvy Simo in the championship match and after three sets, 21-15, 20-22, 15-9, Kolinske captured her fifth-career AVP win. Kolinske, a two-time All-American, and Pepperdine's all-time winningest player, was an integral part of two AVCA National Championship-winning teams in 2012 and 2014.

Additional Pepperdine alumni, Quiggle, Shields, Kraft, Brook Bauer, Carly Skjodt also competed in Denver. Five Waves of the six advanced to the quarterfinals, with three reaching the semifinals.

Quiggle, alongside partner Sarah Schermerhorn-Murphy, captured her first-ever AVP win in Hermosa Beach on July 9. The pair defeated the No. 2 seed, No. 3 seed, and the No. 7 seed, sweeping through three of their five opponents. After defeating the second-seed duo of Megan Kraft and Emily Stockman, 21-18, 21-16, in the quarterfinal round, the pair produced an upset that would give them momentum for the rest of their matches.

The sixth-seeded pair faced off against the 13th-seed duo, Megan Rice and Savvy Simo in the decisive championship round. Quiggle and Schermerhorn-Murphy swept their opponent in two sets, 21-19, 21-18, to win Quiggle's first AVP tour title. While with the Pepperdine beach volleyball program, Quiggle was the 2018 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, part of the 2017 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team, a 2017 National Champion Runner-up, and a two-time All-American with All-Academic honors.

Other Waves, including Kolinske, Bauer, Kraft, and Skjodt competed in Hermosa Beach. Four Waves, Bauer, Kolinske, Kraft, and Quiggle made it to the quarterfinal round, while Quiggle and Bauer advanced to the semifinal round.
