Waves Earn Midweek Victory Over Hawai'i

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team picked up another midweek contest victory after defeating Hawai'i 11-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (17-25) got on the board first against the Rainbow Warriors (21-16) taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning.  They tallied another run in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Pepperdine only allowed Hawai'i to score in two of the nine innings played.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Senior Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) was 3-for-5 on the day including a double and his 16th home run of the season. Johnson tied his career-high in runs scored with three and had three RBI. His homer today ties him seventh on the all-time single season list with G.J. Raymundo (1999) and he now has 35 career home runs which ties him third all-time with Brad Bierley (1982-85).
  • Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 2-for-2 on the day and drew three walks. Landis had a RBI and crossed the plate once.
  • Freshman infielder Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) had two hits and scored a run.
  • Freshman RHP Nick Bonn (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) threw a career-high 4.2 innings and collected his third win of the season, in relief. Bonn sat down a career-high four hitters.
 
GAME RECAP
 
With one out in the top of the first inning, Ryan Johnson sent the first pitch he saw out of the yard over the center field wall to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) drew a walk. Quintt Landis then smacked a double to center to give Pepperdine runners on a second and third with two outs. The Waves scored the second run of the inning on a Rainbow Warriors' wild pitch, 2-0. Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) made it 4-0 on a double to right center. Pepperdine added another run in the bottom of the second inning on a John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) doubled to right field, 5-0.
 
In the top of the third inning, Hawaii got a run back on a double down the right field line, 5-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pepperdine tacked on another run after a bases loaded walk, 6-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Johnson doubled down the left field line to score another run and make it 7-1. Orellana, Quintt Landis and Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) all hit RBI singles to add to the Pepperdine lead, 10-1. In the top of the sixth inning, Hawaii scored three runs on five hits to cut the deficit to six, 10-4.  After a scoreless seventh inning for both sides, the Waves added a run on a Johnson single up the middle to make it 11-4.
 
In the top of the final frame, the Waves sat down the Rainbow Warriors in order on two fly balls to left and a Jack Baird (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) strikeout to collect the victory.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves will have a bye weekend and then travel through the canyon for a midweek contest on Tuesday, May 9 to play CSUN. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be live on ESPN+.
