SCOUTING THE WAVES

With three singles players making the cut, Pepperdine is the lone non-Power 5 team to send multiple singles players to the NCAA Tournament. In fact, the three Waves nearly outnumber the rest of the mid-major field, as only five other schools (Denver, North Florida, Old Dominion, Princeton and UCSB) are holding it down for the non-Power 5 institutions. Additionally, the Waves have multiple All-Americans with Broadus and Tjen serving as the top-overall seed, plus Tjen earning a top-16 bid in singles.

Tjen is the 23rd All-American in program history and gives the Waves an All-American singles player for the fourth consecutive year. While playing at Oregon during as a freshman in 2021, Tjen reached the semifinals and earned All-American honors for her run. This year, Tjen was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, amassed a 26-8 record and carries a five-match win streak heading into NCAAs.

Her doubles partner, Broadus, is no stranger to NCAA Tournament action. As a true freshman last year, she and Tjen made a semifinal run in doubles, where they became All-American status for their efforts. This season, Broadus and Tjen have been consistently ranked amongst the top-ranked doubles teams in the nation; they have won four-straight matches heading into this week.

In singles play, Broadus has a 22-0 record in dual singles play and 35 wins overall. With another win, she will move into a four-way tie with 36 single-season wins — a feat she accomplished last year too.

Rounding out the Waves is the senior Zaar: the fifth player to make multiple NCAA Singles Tournament appearances under current head coach Per Nilsson. Zaar made a run to the semifinals in singles last year that included an upset win over the 6-seed Sarah Hamner of South Carolina. Zaar was a first-team All-WCC selection in singles and doubles this year; she won 10 of her last 11 matches prior to this week's tournament.
