MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team completed the comeback and defeated Cal Poly 4-3 in a midweek contest on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves collected both midweek wins against the Mustangs this season.
The Waves (16-25) were scoreless against the Mustangs (14-28) for the first six innings before they got on the board after a RBI hit-by-pitch. Pepperdine went ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring three runs on a two-RBI double by
Ryan Johnson and a Cal Poly error.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) was 2-for-3 on the day and had one walk.
- Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) had a double and two RBI.
- Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) was 1-for-1 on the day with a double and crossed the plate twice. Schoen drew three walks and was hit by a pitch once.
- Freshman RHP Dylan Stewart (Alameda, Calif./Saint Joseph Notre Dame HS) threw a career-high 3.0 innings in relief to collect his first career win. Stewart tied his career-high in strikeouts after sitting down two Mustangs.
- Freshman RHP Gunnar Nichols (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) threw 1.0 innings in relief and collected his second save of the season.
GAME RECAP
Cal Poly scored first on a double to right field to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Mustangs added another run in the top of the second on a sac fly to left, 2-0. After four scoreless innings for both squads, the Waves had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Pepperdine was then hit by a pitch, which brought in a run and got them within one, 2-1.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Waves had another bases loaded situation.
Ryan Johnson then smacked a double down the left field line scoring two runs and the third run came around on a Cal Poly error to give Pepperdine a 4-2 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, the Mustangs got one back on a double down the left field line, 4-3, but the Waves shut it down on a fly ball to center to hold onto the win.

Pepperdine will play another midweek contest on Wednesday, May 3 playing host to Hawai'i. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
