Pepperdine Returns Home for WCC Series with Saint Mary's

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team will be back at Eddy D. Field Stadium for a three-game West Coast Conference series hosting Saint Mary's beginning on Thursday, April 6 and concluding on Saturday, April 8.
 
SCHEDULE:
Thursday, April 6 - Pepperdine (8-18, 2-7) vs. Saint Mary's (10-14, 5-4) at 3 PM
Friday, April 7 - Pepperdine vs. Saint Mary's at 3 PM
Saturday, April 8 - Pepperdine vs. Saint Mary's at 1 PM

TICKETS: For any games played at Pepperdine, patrons must have an e-ticket prior to arriving on campus. Pepperdine students, staff and faculty just need their Pepperdine ID card for entry. Tickets can be found at pepperdinewaves.com/tickets.

SERIES VS. SAINT MARY'S: Pepperdine holds the overall series lead against Saint Mary's, 129-41. Last season, the Waves fell to the Gaels 2-1 in the series in Moraga.
 
LAST GAME: Pepperdine fell 2-1 in the third West Coast Conference series of the season to San Diego at Fowler Park. In game one, the Waves collected an 8-3 victory over the Toreros. Pepperdine jumped out front 3-0 over San Diego in the first inning, but the Toreros tied it in the bottom of the second. Pepperdine then took the lead back in the top of the sixth inning and held San Diego scoreless the rest of the game. The Waves tallied 11 hits for its eight runs and only allowed four hits for the opposition. Charles Masino was 3-for-5 on the night including a double. Masino also had one RBI and scored a run. John Peck was 2-for-4 including an RBI and crossed the plate once. Ryan Johnson hit his 10th home run of the season, which was a two-run shot. Shane Telfer threw 6.0 innings only allowing three hits and three runs. Telfer struck out four Toreros and collected his fourth win of the season. Jack Baird threw 3.0 innings and allowed only one hit. Baird collected his second save of the season.
 
In game two, Pepperdine dropped 8-4 to San Diego. The Waves were up 4-1 over the Toreros after the first inning, but San Diego tied it in the bottom of the fourth and hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh. Charles Masino was 2-for-4 on the night including one RBI and one run scored. Ryan Johnson was also 2-for-4 and scored one run. Lincoln Orellana had one hit and one RBI.
 
In Sunday's rubber match, the Waves came up one-short and fell 7-6 to the Toreros. Pepperdine trailed early on against San Diego, but cut the deficit to two in the top of the fourth inning. San Diego was able to extend the lead to 7-3 heading into the final frame, but Pepperdine did not give up and was able to bring in three runs and get the score within one before getting retired on a ground ball. Greg Mehlhaff was 2-for-4 on the day and had one RBI. Devon Walczykowski had a double, a walk and two RBI. Cam Conley got the Waves within two after an RBI single in the top of the ninth. Zach Chonkich threw a career-high 2.2 innings in relief and struck out a career-high two hitters.
 
Pepperdine jumped back into the win column after defeating Cal Poly 9-3 on Tuesday in a midweek contest at Baggett Stadium. The Waves fell behind 2-0 to the Mustangs, but a four-run top of the second inning including a bases-clearing double by Greg Mehlhaff propelled Pepperdine over Cal Poly for the win. The Waves held Mustangs scoreless from the fourth to the ninth inning. Charles Masino was 2-for-3 with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Masino scored three runs for Pepperdine, which tied his career-high and stole a base. John Peck was 3-for-5 including a double and two triples. This was the first game this season Peck hit two triples and second time in his career he's hit two in one game. Mehlhaff was 2-for-4 including a double and tied his career-high in RBI with four. Mehlhaff crossed the plate once. Jack Basseer was also 2-for-4 and had two RBI. Nathan Diamond threw a career-high 6.0 innings and only allowed four hits. Diamond collected his first win this season. Josiah Castillo threw 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and collected his first save in a Pepperdine uniform.
 
HONORS: Ryan Johnson notched the season's first West Coast Conference weekly honors for the Pepperdine baseball team when he was named Player of the Week on March 6. He batted a .571 and had an 11 RBI week, while posting back-to-back games with two home runs and five RBI to tie a career-high in RBI. In four appearances last week, Johnson only had two strikeouts and scored seven runs. He ended the week with five homers and a double.
 
Shane Telfer earned the second West Coast Conference weekly honors for Pepperdine as he was named the Pitcher of the Week on March 27. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings against Gonzaga in the series-opening 15-0 victory en route to his third win of the season. Telfer held the Bulldogs to only two hits and five walks, while earning eight strikeouts, two shy from his career-high.
 
WCC/NATIONAL LEADERS: The Waves rank top-five in multiple categories on the WCC leaderboards. Pepperdine is fourth in runs scored (160), fourth in RBI (146), fifth in hits (219) and tied for fifth in home runs (23).
 
Pepperdine also has multiple Waves in the top-20 in WCC stats. Ryan Johnson leads the conference in home runs (10), third in slugging percentage (.733), tied for third in on-base percentage (.479), tied for sixth in RBI (25) and 14th in batting average (.333). Greg Mehlhaff is tied for eighth in RBI (23). Jack Basseer is 15th in the WCC in batting average (.329). On the pitching side, Shane Telfer is tied for first in the WCC in wins (four), third in ERA (2.70) and sixth in strikeouts (38).
 
Johnson ranks tied for 34th in home runs (10), nationally and 41st in slugging percentage (.733).
 
OFFENSIVE STREAKS: Charles Masino leads the Waves in a reached base streak with 13 straight games. Lincoln Orellana is second on the squad with the longest on-base streak with 12 games and he is also currently on a six-game hitting streak. Jack Basseer is currently on a six-game hitting and on-base streak. John Peck has reached base in 10 consecutive games. Ryan Johnson and Greg Mehlhaff are each on a nine-game reached base streak.
