MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell 11-6 in the West Coast Conference series finale to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (15-25, 7-14) tied the game 5-all with the Broncos (23-15, 10-8) in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Santa Clara scored two runs in each of the next three innings to secure the win and series.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) was 2-for-4 on the day.
- Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) was also 2-for-4 on the day and had two RBI. Schoen also scored one run for Pepperdine.
- Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) hit his 15th home run of the season, which was a two-run blast and ties him eighth on the Pepperdine all-time list. Johnson still leads the WCC in homers.
GAME RECAP
The Broncos got on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Waves had bases loaded with no outs.
Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) hit a hard sac fly to right field on a full count to tie the game 1-all.
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) gave the Waves a 2-1 lead after a sac fly to center. Santa Clara took the lead back in the top of the third inning after scoring four runs on three hits to make it 5-2.
Grant Schoen led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single through the right side.
Ryan Johnson then sent one over the left field fence to get Pepperdine back within one, 5-4.
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) hit an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 5-all. In the top of the seventh, Santa Clara went back on top after a two-run homer, 7-5. Pepperdine answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to get within one, thanks to a Schoen sac fly to right, 7-6.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Broncos grabbed two insurance runs on a homer over the right field fence, 9-6. Santa Clara added two more to their lead in the top of the ninth inning on a hit to the right side, 11-6. In the bottom half of the final frame, the Waves left a man on base after being retired on a ground ball and a strikeout.

- John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) has now reached base in 24 consecutive games.
- Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) is now on a 21-game on-base streak.
- Basseer has reached base in 20 straight games.
- Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) is on a 14-game on-base streak and an eight game hitting streak.

The Waves will stay on home turf and host Cal Poly on Tuesday, May 2 for a midweek contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm and the game will be live on the WCC Network.
