Peck Walks Off Gauchos in Extras

MALIBU, Calif. – John Peck hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Pepperdine baseball team earned a 4-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (14-20) fell behind in the top of the second inning, 1-0, to the Gauchos (22-12), but answered in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Pepperdine grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, on a Peck home run, but UC Santa Barbara tied the game in the top of the sixth at an even 2-all. Both squads were scoreless for the final three scheduled innings of play to force the extra inning. Each squad won a midweek contest on their home turf.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Junior shortstop Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was 3-for-5 on the day including two home runs and three RBI. Peck scored two runs for the Waves. This is the first time Peck has hit two homers in a game since his freshman season (3/19/21 at USF).
  • Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 2-for-4 on the day.
  • Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) hit his third home run of the season.
  • Redshirt sophomore RHP Dylan MacCallum (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) threw 2.0 innings in relief and struck out a career-high three hitters.
  • Junior RHP Zach Chonkich (Redlands, Calif./Redlands HS) threw 1.0 innings in relief to collect his second win of the season.
 
GAME RECAP
 
The Gauchos took the lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run over the center field wall. Pepperdine then answered with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Bradshaw sending one over the right field wall to tie the game 1-all. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Peck went yard over the right field wall to give Pepperdine a 2-1 lead.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, the Gauchos tied the game 2-all on a single to center field. After three scoreless innings, the Waves and Gauchos went into extras. In the top of the 10th inning, Chonkich and the Waves had a quick three up, three down inning. With one out in the bottom of the 10th for Pepperdine, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Calif./Seton Catholic HS) drew a walk on a full count. On a 1-2 count, Peck then sent one deep over the center field wall to give the Waves a walk-off victory.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves will go back to Northern California for its next WCC series as they visit Pacific for three-games starting on Friday, April 21 and concluding on Sunday, April 23. First pitch for game one will be at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
