SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a midweek contest 11-1 to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

The Waves (4-6) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning to the Gauchos (8-3) and were held to only four hits.

BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) went 2-for-4 on the night and was the only Wave to cross the plate. Both Basseer's hits were doubles.
  • Graduate student infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) had a single and brought in the only Pepperdine run.
  • Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) also had one hit.
  • Freshman RHP Dylan Stewart (Alameda, Calif./Saint Joseph Notre Dame HS) threw 1.2 innings in relief and collected his first two strikeouts in a Pepperdine uniform.
GAME RECAP

The Gauchos got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom of the second, UCSB added another run on a sac fly to right to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gauchos hit a double to right center to tack another run. Jonah Sebring of UCSB followed up with a single up the middle to bring in two more runs 5-0. In a bases-loaded two-out situation for the Gauchos, a single through the left side added two more runs to the lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Basseer hit his second double of the game to give Pepperdine a base runner. After a ground out, Mehlhaff roped a single to left to bring in Basseer for the Waves' first run, 7-1. The Gauchos countered and added four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 11-1.

Pepperdine had a man on in the top of the ninth inning by a walk, but the Waves were retired with a fly-out to right and strikeouts to end the inning.
