Pepperdine Comes Back to Defeat Cal State Fullerton

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team completed a comeback and secured a 6-5 win over Cal State Fullerton in game one on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (5-6) fell behind 4-1 to the Titans (4-7) in the top of the sixth inning, but Pepperdine bounced back in the bottom half of the sixth to bring in three runs and tie the game. Pepperdine then scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead. A scoreless eighth inning brought the Titans to the top of the ninth inning where they scored one to cut the deficit to one. Bobby Christy struck out the Titans for the final out to hold on to the win.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Junior shortstop John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 3-for-3 on the day including a solo homer. Peck crossed the plate three times, which ties his career-high.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) had a three-run double. Walczykowski's three RBI tied his career-high.
  • Sophomore RHP Bobby Christy (Odessa, Fla./Sickles HS) threw 3.0 innings in relief and collected his first win of the season. Christy allowed four hits and only one run.
 
GAME RECAP
 
After two scoreless innings, the Waves took a 1-0 lead over the Titans on a solo homer to right field by John Peck. In the top of the fourth inning, Cal State Fullerton tied the game on a single up the middle. The Titans then took the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a single to right field that brought in a run to make it 2-1.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, Cal State Fullerton added two more runs to the lead on a two-run shot over the left field wall by Cole Urman. In the bottom of the sixth, Peck led off with a single to left. Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) drew a walk to give Pepperdine runners on first and second. After two outs, Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) earned a walk to load the bases. With a 1-1 count, Devon Walczykowski sent a double to left center to clear the bases and tie the game four-all.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) put down a bunt for a base hit. The Waves moved Bradshaw to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pepperdine had back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. The Waves took the lead back, 5-4, on a fielder's choice play to second. Pepperdine earned an insurance run on a wild pitch by the Titans, making the score 6-4.
 
In the top of the final inning, the Titans sent a double to left-center to lead off. The Waves got the first out on a ground ball to second. Cal State Fullerton hit a sacrifice fly to right and got within one, 6-5. With two outs, the Titans hit a double to left field to get the tying run on second. Christy struck out the last batter to end the inning and secure the win.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves and Titans will play a double-header on Sunday, March 12 beginning at 11 a.m. Game two will be 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games will be live on the WCC Network.
