MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped the series against Cal State Fullerton, finishing with a double-header on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (5-8) came back during game one against the Titans (6-7) to force extra innings, but two runs for Cal State Fullerton in 12th gave them a 10-8 win. In the rubber match, the two squads were tied 1-1 after the first inning, but the Titans scored a run in four of the seven innings played to collect a 5-1 win and secure the series.
GAME ONE BIG WAVES
- Junior shortstop John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 3-for-6 and crossed the plate three times. Peck tied his career-high in runs scored.
- Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 2-for-5 including a double and a walk. Johnson brought in one run and touched home plate once.
- Sophomore designated hitter Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored once.
- Freshman RHP Gunnar Nichols (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) threw a career-high 3.0 innings in relief and struck out two hitters, which ties his career-high.
GAME ONE RECAP
After three scoreless innings, the Titans struck first on a two-run double to right center in the top of the fourth inning. Cal State Fullerton added two more to increase the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Waves got two back on a
Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) single to center, 4-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cal State Fullerton added three more runs on four hits to extend the lead 7-2.
John Peck led off the bottom of the sixth inning with an infield single.
Ryan Johnson sent a double to left field to give Pepperdine runners on second and third.
Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) took the first pitch he saw into right field for a single to bring in two runs and make it 7-4.
Devon Walczykowski then hit a two-run blast to get the Waves within one at 7-6.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Waves tied the game 7-all on a Johnson RBI single to center. The Titans took advantage of a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning and came across the plate to take an 8-7 lead. In the other half of the eighth inning, with two outs, the Waves were hit by a pitch before Walczykowski singled to center to put runners on first and second.
Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) took the first pitch he saw and sent it right back up the middle to bring a run in and tie the game 8-8.
After the final inning and three extra innings, Cal State Fullerton brought two runs in on a double to take a 10-8 lead. The Waves had a man on in the bottom of the 12th, but were unable to bring him around.
GAME TWO BIG WAVES
- Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) was 1-for-3 and scored a run.
- Mehlhaff went 1-for-2 including a double. He brought in the only Pepperdine run.
- Freshman RHP Nick Bonn (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) threw a career-high 3.0 innings in relief and struck out a career-high three batters.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Titans scored in the top of the first inning on a double to left field. Pepperdine answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game on a Mehlhaff double to right.
After two scoreless innings, the Titans were on second and third and were awarded a balk to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Cal State Fullerton had back-to-back walks. With one out, the Titans hit a double to left field and then added another run, 4-1, in the top of the sixth inning on a single to left.
In the top of the final inning, the Titans hit an RBI single to left to make it, 5-1. The Waves were retired in order on two ground outs and a strikeout in the bottom of the seventh.

The Waves will play a midweek game against crosstown foe CSUN on Monday, March 13 in Malibu. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be live on the WCC Network.
