Pepperdine Falls to CSUN in Midweek

MALIBU, Calif. –  The Pepperdine baseball team fell 8-3 to crosstown foe CSUN on Monday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in a midweek contest.
 
The Waves (5-9) fell behind 6-0 to the Matadors (9-3) after the fourth inning, but cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning. CSUN added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth. 
 
BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) went 1-for-2 on the day and brought in two runs.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) had one RBI and one walk for the day.
GAME RECAP
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Matadors brought in four runs on three hits in the top of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. The two squads were scoreless in the third inning. In the top of the fourth inning, CSUN added two runs to their lead on a double to left and a single.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with one out, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) was hit by a pitch and then Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) drew a walk. With two outs, Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) also drew a walk that loaded the bases. Devon Walczykowski was hit by a pitch, which brought a run in to make it 6-1. Jack Basseer had a 3-1 count, and on the next pitch, he sent the ball over the second baseman into right which brought in two more runs to cut CSUN's lead in half, 6-3.
 
In the top of the final inning, the Matadors added two more runs on two hits to make it 8-3. In the bottom of the ninth the Waves had a runner on with two outs, but a line drive to the CSUN second baseman ended Pepperdine's chances at a comeback.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves open up West Coast Conference play with a road trip to the Pacific Northwest to match up with Portland for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 17 and concluding on Sunday, March 19. Friday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
