Waves Fall to Iowa in Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell 10-1 to Iowa in the final game of the South Alabama Invitational on Sunday morning. The Waves went 2-1 on the weekend.
 
The Waves (4-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Hawkeyes (9-1), but Iowa answered back in the third inning scoring two runs and added more throughout the game. Pepperdine was held to only four hits.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 2-for-4 including a solo home run and scored the only Waves' run of the game. This is the first time for Johnson hitting a home run in three consecutive games. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak.
  • Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) had one hit.
  • Graduate student infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) had the Waves' only double of the game.
  • Sophomore RHP Bobby Christy (Odessa, Fla./Sickles HS) threw 4.0 innings in relief, which tied his career-high. 
GAME RECAP
 
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Johnson got the Waves on the board first with a solo blast over center field, 1-0.  Though Iowa and Pepperdine were scoreless in the second inning, the Hawkeyes scored two runs in the top of the third inning on RBI walks.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Michael Seegers of Iowa hit a solo home run to add to the Hawkeyes' lead, 3-1. Two more scoreless innings for both squads brought Iowa back up at the top of the eighth inning. The Hawkeyes scored five runs on four hits including a three-run home run by Sam Hojnar, 8-1.
 
The Waves had a runner on in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out, but a double-play retired Pepperdine. In the top of the ninth inning, Iowa led off with a triple. With one out, Iowa hit a sac fly to score the ninth run. The Hawkeyes made it 10-1 on an RBI single to left.
 
In the bottom of the final inning, the Waves were retired in order with back-to-back fly outs to center and a routine ground ball to shortstop.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves will continue on the road for a midweek against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, March 7. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. and the game will be live on ESPN+.
