Waves Drop to CSUN on the Road

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell 5-4 to CSUN on Monday afternoon at Matador Field in a midweek matchup.

The Waves (5-13) had the lead over the Matadors (12-4), but CSUN tied it up in the seventh inning and added two more to take the lead and hold onto the win.

In the top of the first inning, with two-outs, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) and Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) hit back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Quintt Landis sent one right back up the middle to bring in Johnson and give the Waves a 1-0 lead. The Matadors answered in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run.

John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) led off the top of the third inning with an infield single. Johnson drew a walk and then Orellana was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pepperdine took advantage of a CSUN wild pitch, scoring a run to take a 2-1 lead. Landis then had an RBI sac fly to center field to make it 3-1. Jack Basseer brought in the fourth run after a double to left field. In the bottom half of the third, CSUN cut the deficit in half on a Pepperdine wild pitch, 4-2.

The Matadors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run blast over the left field wall, 4-all, and then took the lead, 5-4, after a single up the middle. The Waves were held scoreless for the final two innings and were retired in order in the top of the ninth.

The Waves will be back in Malibu for the second weekend of West Coast Conference play, hosting Gonzaga for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 24. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.

- Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 1-for-3 on the day and had two RBI.
