MALIBU, Calif. — This week, the #14 Pepperdine men's golf team heads to Hawai'i for the Amer Ari Invitational, a tournament the Waves previously won in 2020.
Â

Â
FIELD — The Waves are one of 20 teams in the field. In addition to Pepperdine, the field includes host Hawai'i-Hilo, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Washington, Arizona State, Hawai'i, UCLA, Texas Tech, San Jose State, Oklahoma State, Pacific, North Carolina, UC Davis, Texas, Oregon State, Stanford, Osaka Gakuin, Oregon and TCU.
Â
EVENT HISTORY — Pepperdine won the Amer Ari Invitational in 2020, and William Mouw was the individual champion. Last season, the Waves finished 6th with a three-round total of 830 (278-270-282), which was good for 34-under. Pepperdine also played in the event 14 times between 1993 and 2006 when it was known as the Taylor Made Intercollegiate.
Â
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — Pepperdine's lineup for the Amer Ari Invitational consists of senior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS), graduate Luke Gifford (Boca Raton, Fla./South Florida), graduate Sam Choi (Anaheim, Calif./New Mexico), graduate Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) and sophomore Ian Maspat (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS). Graduate Roberto Nieves (Miami, Fla./Delaware) and freshman Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit HS) will play as individuals.
Â
RANKINGS — The Waves are currently #14 by Golfstat, #16 by Golfweek/Sagarin and #15 in the Bushnell/Golfweek coaches poll.
Â
Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings: Hitchner #10, Mouw #45.
Â
Golfstat individual rankings: Hitchner #29, Mouw #43, Choi #106.
Â
PGA Tour University rankings: Mouw #7, Choi #16, Hitchner #23, Gifford #91, Nieves #107.
Â
World Amateur Golf Rankings: Mouw #13, Hitchner #35, Choi #38.
Â
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS — The Waves finished tied-second at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate tied-third at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in October. William Mouw finished third and second respectively as an individual in the two tournaments. Pepperdine competed at the prestigious East Lake Cup as well, finishing fourth in stroke play. The Waves defeated Texas 4-1 before falling to 2022 NCAA Champions Arizona State by a narrow 3-2 margin. Pepperdine began slowly at its own Southwestern Invitational last week, finishing the first round tied-sixth. The Waves had better second and third rounds than any other team, moving up four spots to finish second overall with a 1-under, but it would not be enough to overcome a 14-under display from Texas for the win.
