GAME RECAP
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Waves broke open in the bottom of the third with five runs. Goodman led off with a solo blast against the slight breeze over the left center wall to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.
Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) and
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) drew back-to-back walks. The Matadors collected the first out, but on a 0-2 count
Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) singled up the middle to move the runners and load the bases. Johnson roped an RBI single off the left field wall to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. The Waves took advantage of a two-out error to tally three more runs to the lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, CSUN got on the scoreboard with two runs on two hits to make it 5-2. Following four scoreless innings, in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Matadors earned a walk to lead off. Joey Kramer of CSUN sent one out to cut the Waves lead to one at 5-4. The Matadors then singled through the left side to put the tying run on base. Pepperdine struck out a CSUN batter and made a smart play to get the lead runner at second and collect the second out. The Waves got the final out on a ball to the right side and held onto the victory.
