Waves Fall in Close One to CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in a close crosstown contest 6-5 to CSUN in the two-game series final at Matador Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Waves (2-4) did have an early lead over the Matadors (5-1) and tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, but an error in the sixth inning for Pepperdine would prove to be the one-run difference. Pepperdine and CSUN split the series.

  • Graduate student infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) hit his second home run of the season, which was a three-run blast. Mehlhaff also brought in another run on a ground ball. Mehlhaff's four RBI is a career-high.
  • Freshman infielder Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) had one hit and crossed the plate two times. Goodman's two runs scored are a career-high.
GAME RECAP

Masino led off the game with a double to center. With one out, the Waves hit a ground ball to the second baseman that advanced Masino to third. Mehlhaff hit a ground ball to the shortstop that brought in the first run of the game to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Waves broke open in the top of the third. Goodman drew a walk to lead off. Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) sent one right back up the middle. With two outs, Mehlhaff went yard over the left field wall to make it 4-0 in favor of Pepperdine.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, CSUN put together a rally on two hits to score five runs and took advantage on a couple of Pepperdine passed balls. The Matadors took the lead on a three-run double off the right center wall.

The Waves answered in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-all after Goodman led off with a single up the middle. Sheehan earned a walk, which moved Goodman into scoring position. On a ground ball to the right side, the Matador second baseman got the out at first, but the Waves advanced to second and third. An RBI ground ball to the shortstop by Peck brought Goodman home.

CSUN tallied another run on taking advantage of a Pepperdine error to take a 6-5 lead. The Waves were unable to put a rally together and were retired in order at the top of the ninth.
