Waves Shut Out Boston College on Opening Day

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team's bats were on fire today at Eddy D. Field Stadium, as the Waves collected 15 hits in the 9-0 season opener shutout against Boston College.
 
The Waves (1-0) got out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning over the Eagles (0-1) and kept the momentum at the plate going to collect a series opener shutout. Pepperdine had two four-run innings including two homers in the eighth inning by Connor Bradshaw and John Peck.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior LHP Shane Telfer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) threw 6.0 innings, while only giving up two hits and striking out four hitters. Telfer collected the first win of the season and his sixth career win as a Wave.
  • Junior RHP Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) threw 3.0 innings only giving up one hit and striking out four batters to collect the first save of the season. This was Llewellyn's first career save as a Wave. 
  • Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 4-for-4 on the day with a RBI and a walk.
  • Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 3-for-4 including a homer to center.
  • Graduate student infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) had two hits and crossed the plate once.
  • Junior infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) roped a three-run insurance home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
GAME RECAP
 
The Waves got hot in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Mehlhaff and Johnson hit back to back center field singles. With one out, Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) roped an RBI single to center to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. Pepperdine started a two-out rally when Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) sent a double to left center scoring two to increase the advantage to 3-0. Masino got in on the two-out rally after sending an RBI single to right field giving the Waves a 4-0 lead over the Eagles.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) hit a lead off single to right. Pemberton got a good jump on his lead off and stole second to put himself in scoring position with one out. After the second out, Johnson roped another single to center, bringing in Pemberton to increase the Pepperdine lead to 5-0.
 
Pepperdine got going again with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning as Bradshaw went yard for the first homer of the 2023 season to add to the Waves' lead. With two outs, Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had a great at-bat and drew a walk. Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./ Mountain Pointe HS) stepped into the box to pinch hit and sent one right back up the middle to give the Waves runners on first and second. Peck came to the plate and sent one over the center field fence for a three-run homer and put the Waves up 9-0.
 
The Waves did not give up a hit in the top of the ninth inning and closed out the game with a ground out to Peck at shortstop.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves and Eagles will face off in game two of the series on Saturday, Feb. 18. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
