SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The #5 Pepperdine water polo team defeated #17 Santa Clara 11-6 on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Waves used solid defense to power their way to victory and only surrendered six goals on the day.
BIG WAVES
- Junior center Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) had four goals against the Broncos.
- Senior attacker Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) posted a hat-trick in the game.
- Graduate goalie Antonio Knez (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) had 10 saves on the day while posting a .625 save percentage.
GAME RECAP
Santa Clara scored the first goal of the game with a man up, but Walsh quickly found the back of the net and tied the game 1-1.
Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) then scored a goal of his own to put Pepperdine in front 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Hosea opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals and increased the Waves' advantage, 4-1. Walsh and
Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) both found the back of the net and pushed Pepperdine's lead to five, 6-1. The Broncos scored a goal late in the half, and the Waves took a 6-2 lead into the break.
Walsh scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter to add on to Pepperdine's lead, 8-2. After a few scoreless minutes,
Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) scored his first goal of the game and increased the Waves' advantage, 9-2. Santa Clara found the back of the net, but a late goal by Hosea put Pepperdine back in front by seven at the end of the third period, 10-3.
Brosnan scored his second goal of the game to open the fourth to increase the lead for the Waves, 11-3. The Broncos tried to mount a rally, but it was too late as Pepperdine won the contest 11-6.
Pepperdine was led by Walsh who had four goals in the game, and a total of five Waves scored in the contest.
