Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | By Athletic Communications

Pepperdine Downs Pacific

MALIBU, Calif. The #6 Pepperdine water polo team cruised to an 18-11 victory over #17 Pacific on Friday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves outshot the Tigers .563 to .379.

With the win, Pepperdine clinched a share of the West Coast Conference regular season title and the No. 1 overall seed in the inaugural WCC tournament. Depending on other results, the Waves could be outright WCC regular season champions.

BIG WAVES
  • Graduate driver Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) tallied two goals and four assists on the day for a total of six points.
  • Senior center defender Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) notched a hat-trick against the Tigers.
  • Sophomore attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) scored a team-high five goals in the game.
  • Graduate goalie Antonio Knez (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) had 13 saves on the day while posting a .542 save percentage.
GAME RECAP

Pacific scored the first goal of the game, but Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) quickly found the back of the net and tied the game 1-1. The Waves and Tigers traded goals in the middle of the period before a late goal by Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) gave Pepperdine a 3-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
 
Knez blanked the Tigers in the second period. Tierney and Jon Carcarey (Lompoc, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) both found the back of the net in the quarter, and the Waves took a 5-2 lead into the break.
 
Pepperdine and Pacific traded goals throughout the first half of the third quarter as the Waves had a 10-6 advantage with 3:13 left in the period. Solid defense and a pair of goals by Csapo put Pepperdine up six heading into the fourth quarter, 12-6.
 
Back-to-back goals to start the period by Hosea and Csapo increased the Waves' advantage to eight, 14-6. Pepperdine tacked on four more goals before the end of the game as they went on to win 18-11.
