Pepperdine Blanks Saint Mary's 3-0

MALIBU, Calif.  – The Pepperdine women's soccer team recorded its first West Coast Conference shutout of the season after defeating Saint' Mary's 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

The Waves (5-3-5, 2-1-0 WCC) took an early 2-0 lead over the Gaels (6-5-2, 0-3-0 WCC) in the first half, courtesy of Tori Waldeck and Tatum Wynalda. Julia Quinonez tacked on a goal right after half time and Pepperdine held Saint Mary's to secure the win. The Waves dominated play and put up 19 shots compared to the Gaels' nine and had 13 in just the first 45 minutes of play.

GOALS

Pepperdine 17': Freshman forward Julia Quinonez (Torrance, Calif./Torrance HS) beat two Saint Mary's defenders on the left side of the field to the ball. As Quinonez gained control of the ball, she then sent a beautiful one-hop cross to senior midfielder Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS). Waldeck made her way into the box between two Gaels' players and off the hop, tapped the ball with her right foot into the back of the net. This was Waldeck's fifth goal of the season. This was Waldeck's second game of the season with a goal and an assist, and the fifth of her career.

Pepperdine 35': Junior forward Kelsey Adams (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) stopped the ball in the offensive zone before it went behind the back line and passed the ball into the middle box. The ball connected with a Saint Mary's player, but as the defender tried to clear the ball, sophomore midfielder Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) intercepted the ball with her right foot. Wynalda then got her footing set and sent a right-footed tap past the SMC keeper. This was Wynalda's third goal of the season.

Pepperdine 48': Waldeck sent a cross from the right side of the box towards the middle. As the ball was nearly deflected by a Saint Mary's player, Quinonez dove for the deflection and headed the ball into the back of the net. This was Quinonez's fourth goal of the season. This was the first game of Quinonez's career that she recorded a goal and an assist.
