Waves Comeback Attempt Falls Short

Long Beach, Calif. — The #3 Pepperdine men's water polo dropped a double overtime contest against #9 Long Beach State at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. The Waves were down three goals at the half, but were able to tie the game late in the fourth to send it to overtime. However, the Beach edged out the Waves and won the contest 11-10

  • Graduate driver Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) had four goals in the game.
  • Sophomore attacker Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) scored the game-tying goal with four seconds remaining.
GAME RECAP
 
Long Beach State scored back-to-back goals to open the game to take an early 2-0 lead.  The Beach tacked on another goal to give them a 3-0 advantage going into the second quarter.
 
Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) found the back of the net to open the second period and cut the lead to 3-1. Long Beach State then countered to increase their lead to three, 4-1. After a couple powerplay goals by both teams, the Beach had a 5-2 lead with three minutes left in the first half. Adam Csapo (Budapest Hungary/BME International Secondary School) then found the back of the cage to cut into the Beach's lead, making it a 5-3 game. A late goal by Long Beach State gave them a 6-3 advantage heading into the break.
 
Pepperdine cut Long Beach State's lead to 6-5 thanks to back-to-back goals by Ryan Brosnan to open the third quarter. After a timeout, the Beach found the back of the cage to give them a two-goal lead, 7-5. Anthony D'Ambra (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes) then scored a goal of his own off a penalty shot to bring the Waves within one, 7-6. Long Beach State was able to increase their lead to 9-6 after a pair of goals. Brosnan then found the back of the net for his third goal of the period to make it a 9-7 game heading in the fourth quarter.
 
After a scoreless start to the fourth, Brosnan scored a goal to bring the Waves within one with just under two minutes to play. A clutch stop by Antonio Knez (Dubrovik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) gave the Waves the ball down one with 28 seconds to play. Sandor Gal then put the ball in the back of the net with four seconds remaining to tie the contest 9-9 and send it to overtime.
 
Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) got the scoring going in overtime and gave Pepperdine its first lead of the game 10-9. The Beach then scored a goal of their own to make it a 10-10 game heading into the final three minutes.
 
After a scoreless second half of overtime, Pepperdine and Long Beach State headed into sudden death.
 
The Beach found the back of the net on their opening possession to win the contest 11-10.
