Waves Use Dominant Second Half to Defeat the Lions in the WCC Opener

MALIBU, Calif. — The #5 Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated PCH Cup rival #11 Loyola Marymount 12-5 at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in its first ever West Coast Conference game. The Waves used stifling defense in the second half to defeat the Lions. Pepperdine only allowed one goal in the final 16 minutes. 
 
BIG WAVES
  • Graduate drive Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) tallied three goals and three assists on the day.
  • Sophomore attacker Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) had four goals as well as two assists for a total of six points.
  • Senior attacker Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) tallied three assists on the day.
  • Graduate goalie Antonio Knez (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) had 10 saves on the day, while posting a .667 save percentage.
GAME RECAP
 
Two quick goals by Gal and Brosnan gave the Waves a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. After a back-and-forth finish to the first quarter, Pepperdine took a 4-2 advantage into the second period.
 
Brosnan found the back of the net to open the second quarter, increasing the Waves' lead, 5-2. Late in the period, the Lions countered with two power-play goals and Pepperdine took a 5-4 advantage into the third quarter.
 
Knez showed off his stellar defense in the third quarter as he blanked Loyola Marymount in the period. Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School), Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) and Brosnan all found the back of the net in the period to give the Waves a four-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter, 8-4.
 
Loyola Marymount scored an early goal in the period, but Gal's three goals in the fourth quarter in addition to another goal by Csapo helped seal the 12-5 victory for Pepperdine.

The Waves will head to Santa Clara, Calif. To take on #6 Princeton, Bucknell, #17 Fordham and Long Island University next weekend at the Santa Clara Tournament.
