MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine swimming and diving program opened its 2023-24 season with a home meet with strong showings by its relay teams, but the Waves were defeated by San Diego State on Thursday morning at
Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
MEET RECAP
After the first meet of the year, two swimmers entered the top-10 all-time list for the 100 IM. (class)
Kiana Fan's (Irvine, Calif./Portola HS) time of 1:00.00 marks her sixth on Pepperdine's record books and following right behind her, is (class)
AJ Adams (Castle Rock, Colo./Valor Christian HS) who notched a 1:00.06 showing, which is good for seventh on the list.
Pepperdine's foursome of
Kylie Taylor (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS),
Charli Sunahara (Chino, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS),
Layla Busquets (Diablo, Calif./Monte Vista HS) and
Alexandra Brown (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) earned a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, to start the day, with a time of 1:46.52.
In her collegiate debut, Busquets recorded a second-place showing in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.10.
In the 50 backstroke, Taylor earned a second-place finish with a time of 27.09. Busquets finished close behind her with a 27.72 showing.
Vivian Vallely (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) took second in the1-meter dive event with a final score of 252.75.
SDSU earned 101 points on the morning, while Pepperdine accumulated 47.
NEXT UP: Pepperdine will host the third annual Rodionoff Invite on Friday Oct. 13 and Saturday Oct. 14 at
Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. Diving starts at 10 a.m. and swimming begins at 11 a.m. both days. The event will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required) and links to the stream can be found on Pepperdinewaves.com.
