#4 Pepperdine Defeats #17 California Baptist and Improves to 2-0 in WCC Play

MALIBU, Calif. — The #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated #17 California Baptist 16-11 at Lancer Aquatics Center.  The Waves improved to 2-0 in West Coast Conference play.

California Baptist opened up the game with two quick goals to take a 2-0 lead. Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) then found the back of the net to bring Pepperdine within one, 2-1. After a back-and-forth middle of the first period, Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS), Csapo and Chase Wilson (New York, N.Y./Greenwich HS) scored three straight goals to give the Waves a 5-4 lead going into the second quarter.

The Lancers opened up the scoring in the second quarter, but back-to-back goals by Carcarey, and another goal by Csapo put the Waves in front, 8-5. California Baptist countered with two goals to end the period, and Pepperdine took an 8-7 lead into the break.

Csapo and Brosnan both found the back of the net to start the second half and gave the Waves a three-goal advantage, 10-7. California Baptist added a goal of their own, but Pepperdine was able to pull ahead at the end of the quarter to take a 13-8 lead into the final period.

Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) started off the fourth quarter with a goal for the Waves, increasing their advantage to six, 14-8. The Lancers scored the game's next two goals, but back-to-back goals by Carcarey sealed the game for Pepperdine as they ultimately won the contest 16-11.

- Sophomore attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) had a hat-trick in the contest.
- Graduate driver Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) tallied two goals and picked up an assist against the Lancers.
- Sophomore attacker Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) picked up two assists and a goal in the game.
