MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track programs were each named one of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2022 NCAA Division I All-Academic teams and
Karl Winter was named to the USTFCCCA 2022 All-Academic men's squad, the organization announced today.
Prerequisites to be named an All-Academic Team includes obtaining a grade-point average of at least 3.0 or higher. All-Academic individual athletes must have a grade-point average of 3.25 or above and have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) competed in the NCAA West Preliminary round in Fayetteville, Ark., in the men's 1,500 and 5,000 meters. This was the second time in a row and second time in program history that Winter qualified to run in the preliminary round. Winter made it to the quarterfinal of the 1,500 meters after notching a third-place finish in his heat of the first round in a time of 3:46.24. He then ran a 3:44.64 in his heat in the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meters. Following the 1,500 meter quarterfinals, Winter had his second race of the day in the 5,000 meters, collecting a time of 14:43.53.
Additionally, Winter also has had a phenomenal Waves campaign both on and off the track. He currently holds the Pepperdine records in the mile, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters as well as the second-fastest time in the 800 meters. Winter is also a part of the 4x800 meter relay team that set a new school record this season as well as a part of the distance medley relay team that ran the event for the first time this season earning a new school record. Winter also has the second-fastest time in the men's 8K and the fifth-fastest all-time in the 10K in cross country.
Winter graduated from Pepperdine with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a 3.98 GPA. He is a three-time West Coast Conference All-Academic first team selection, has earned WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll "gold" honors in his four years as a Wave and a four-time Pepperdine Scholar-Athlete.
This marks the first USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for both the men's and women's track program as well as Winter.
