MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team was unable to rally back and fell 4-2 in the West Coast Conference series finale to BYU on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (20-22, 8-13) outhit the Cougars (27-18, 11-10) 8-5, but it wasn't enough to capture the win. BYU held Pepperdine scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-4 on the day with one RBI.
- Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) hit his fifth home run of the season.
- Junior LHP Shane Telfer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) threw a career-high 5.0 innings and only gave up two hits. Telfer had four strikeouts.
GAME RECAP
The Cougars jumped out in front in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field and gave BYU a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Bradshaw led off swinging at the first pitch and sent it yard over the right-center wall to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the eighth inning, BYU answered back with two runs on two hits and took the lead back at 3-1. In the bottom half of the eighth,
Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) led off with a single to left field. With one out,
Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) also singled to left field and advanced Mehlhaff to second.
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) hit an infield single to load the bases. Peck smacked an RBI single to right field to get the Waves within one at 3-2.
In the top of the final inning, BYU collected one more run on an infield single to make it 4-2. The Cougars closed out the series with a double play and a fly ball to take game three.

The Waves hit the road and visit Cal Poly for a midweek non-conference matchup on Tuesday, May 10. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
