SAN LUIS OBISPO, California – Cole Sheehan had a career night, going 3-for-4 including a double, but the Pepperdine baseball team fell 16-4 to Cal Poly on Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium.
A nine-run bottom of the first inning for Cal Poly (28-20) was the difference as the Waves (20-23) were unable to come back.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman catcher Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) was 3-for-4 with a double. Sheehan also had one RBI, which ties his career-high, and crossed the plate once.
- Sophomore outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Masino brought in one run and touched home plate once.
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) roped two hits on the night, including a two-run home run. This was Peck's sixth home run this season.
- Junior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) had two hits on the night.
- Freshman pinch hitter Blake Pou (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) made his Waves' debut and had a single to right field.
GAME RECAP
Cal Poly put nine runs up in the bottom of the first inning on 10 hits to take an early 9-0 lead.
Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) led off the top of the second inning with a one-hop double off the center-field wall. With one out, Sheehan traded places with Conley and roped an RBI double to left center to get the Waves on the board and make it 9-1. Masino smacked an RBI triple to right field and made it 9-2.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs added another run to their lead after a lead-off walk and a double down the right-field line and made it 10-2. Masino led off the top of the fifth inning with a walk. On a 1-0 count, Peck went yard straight over the center field wall and made it 10-4. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cal Poly answered back with four runs on three hits to extend the lead to 14-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs collected another run on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to make it 15-4. Cal Poly hit an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase the lead to 16-4. In the top of the final inning, the Mustangs collected the last out on a ground ball to secure the win.

The Waves will continue their road trip and visit PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Conference weekend series beginning on Friday, May 13. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
