MORAGA, California – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in game one of its West Coast Conference weekend series 11-1 to Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
The Gaels (19-11, 3-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and the Waves (16-12, 5-5) tied it up in the second inning, but a five-run bottom of the sixth propelled Saint Mary's to collect the win.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman catcher Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) tied his career high in hits with two.
- Junior outfielder Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) hit his second career home run and had the Waves' only RBI of the game.
- Freshman pinch hitter Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) hit a double in the top of the ninth inning.
GAME RECAP
The Gaels scored first in the bottom of the third inning with a home run to left field to make it 1-0. The Waves answered right back in the top of the fourth inning with a line drive home run over the left field fence by Landis to tie the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Saint Mary's took the lead at 2-1 on a double to left center and a single up the middle. The Gaels extended the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on five hits to make it 7-1. Saint Mary's kept the bats hot and scored another run in the bottom of the seventh inning at 8-1.
Saint Mary's added three more in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the win on three hits including a home run and made it 11-1.
