Waves' Fukuda Named WCC Player of the Year, Broadus Named Freshman of the Year

MALIBU, California – The #8 Pepperdine women's tennis program cleaned up the postseason West Coast Conference awards on Thursday, as Shiori Fukuda was named the WCC Player of the Year and Savannah Broadus was named the league's Freshman of the Year.

Additionally, Lisa Zaar and Janice Tjen were first-team honorees in singles, while the doubles pairs of Victoria Flores/Zaar and Broadus/Tjen were also named to the first team.

This is the second consecutive year that the Waves have had the league's best player, as Asley Lahey won the award in 2021. Broadus is the second consecutive WCC Freshman of the Year for the Waves, as Taisiya Pachkaleva was honored last season.

Broadus was named to the second team, while #57 Flores and #36 Pachkaleva were named to the All-WCC singles honorable mention squad. Pachkaleva is a return honoree on the All-WCC list as she was a first-team selection last season.

#16 Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) is a repeat first-team selection and was steady for the Waves all season, going 11-6 in the dual season from the top spot and 28-9 overall. She won the singles title at the Freeman Memorial Championship in January and has amassed six ranked wins, most notably taking down #8 Kari Miller from Michigan and #6 Eryn Cayetano from USC, both in straight sets, where she only dropped seven games total.

#97 Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) has gone 14-5 this dual season from the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots. She is currently on a five-match winning streak, defeating opponents from #12 Oklahoma State and #2 Oklahoma in the process.

#27 Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) was an All-WCC honorable mention honoree last season but stepped up this campaign to lead the Waves. The junior went 16-5 from the first, second, third and fourth positions. Zaar has seven ranked wins on her ledger this spring, highlighted by a straight-set win over #17 Alexandra Yepifanova from Stanford and a three-set victory over #29 Salma Ewing of USC.

#91 Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) has made massive waves in her first season in Malibu. The sophomore is one of the hottest players in the country, sporting an 11-match winning streak. She leads Pepperdine with a 17-2 dual singles record from the two, three, four and five spots. Tjen has defeated all four ranked opponents she has faced this season and has won her last four decisions in straight sets.

Playing from the top spot, the 44th-ranked pair of Flores (Fort Dodge, Iowa) and Zaar is 4-5 this dual season and has claimed two WCC Doubles Team of the Week awards. At the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February, the duo defeated the nation's third-ranked doubles pair from Old Dominion, 6-3. Zaar was a second team honoree in doubles last season with Pachkaleva.

From the second court, the 34th-ranked duo of Broadus and Tjen has been victorious in 13 of 14 dual matches this season. The only loss on the season came to a ranked opponent from Cal in March. Twice, the freshman and sophomore were named the WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
