MALIBU, Calif. – The #5 Pepperdine women's tennis program earned its fourth West Coast Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, pummeling Saint Mary's 6-1 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Pepperdine (14-4, 4-0 WCC) jumped on the Gaels (7-8, 2-3 WCC) early in doubles, as court three was the first to finish when Taisiya Pachkaleva (Moscow, Russia) and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) won 6-0. The Waves secured the doubles point after Savannah Broadus (Carrolton, Texas) and Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) were victorious, 6-2, on court two playing together for the first time this dual season.
The Waves took four first sets in singles to keep the momentum going, and #36 Pachkaleva was the first singles victor after a 6-1, 6-2 win on court four. #17 Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) ballooned the Pepperdine lead to 3-0 after a quick 6-0, 6-1 win on court two. With one more clinch needed to secure the match, #98 Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) breezed past her opponent on court six to earn a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Courts one, three and five finished to completion. #82 Broadus won an abbreviated third set to collect a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 [10-6] decision en route to the fourth singles win of the day for the Waves. #79 Tjen kept the momentum going with a straight-set, 7-6 (3), 6-2 win on court three.
To complete the afternoon, Saint Mary's earned a three-set win on court one.
