MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team had two home runs, but fell to Long Beach State 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (14-9) and Long Beach State (13-10) went back and forth in the first four innings, but a two-run fifth inning for the Dirtbags secured the non-conference win.
BIG WAVES
- Graduate student outfielder Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) went 3-for-4 including a double and crossed the plate twice.
- Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits on the day including a solo home run and a double.
- Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) also had a solo home run, which was his second as a Wave.
GAME RECAP
In the bottom of the first inning, the Waves took an early 1-0 lead. With two outs, Malinchak hit a single to left field. Malinchak then advanced to second on a Long Beach State wild pitch and continued to third base. Bradshaw hit a rocket up the middle to score the first run of the game. In the top of the second, the Dirtbags answered back with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1.
Long Beach State added another run in the top of the third inning to make it 2-1, but Pepperdine tied the game at 2-2 on a Peck home run to left field in the bottom of the third. The Waves held the Dirtbags scoreless in the top of the fourth and then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Conley who went yard to left-center, making it 3-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, with two outs, Long Beach State singled to right center scoring the game-tying run and made it 3-3. The Dirtbags then hit an RBI single to left to put them back on top at 4-3. In the top of the sixth inning, an RBI single up the middle by Tanner Carlson of Long Beach State gave the Dirtbags the insurance run at 5-3.
The bottom of the eighth inning, Malinchak led off with a double down the left-field line. Bradshaw hit an infield single chopper to the second baseman, and a throwing error advanced Bradshaw to second and scored Malinchak to make it 5-4. But in the ninth, the Dirtbags secured the win on two ground balls and a fly out to center field.

The Waves will head to Spokane, Wash., in order to visit Gonzaga for a West Coast Conference weekend series beginning on Friday, April 1. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
