Men's Volleyball Falls in Five to BYU

MALIBU, California – A back-and-forth match that lasted two hours and 39 minutes ended in an upset victory for BYU against the #7 Pepperdine men's volleyball team on Friday night, as the Cougars won 32-30, 21-25, 20-25, 31-29, 15-9 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
 
The match saw a total of 28 service aces, 15 by the Cougars (8-11, 3-4) and 13 by the Waves (11-7, 2-3).
 
BIG WAVES
  • Graduate opposite Jaylen Jasper (Annapolis, Md./Stanford) had a match-high 20 kills along with four aces, four digs and three block assists.
  • Sophomore opposite Jacob Steele (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./El Toro HS) had 15 kills on .480 hitting (15-3-25) along with four digs.
  • Sophomore setter Bryce Dvorak (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) posted his second double-double of the season and the third of his career with 46 assists and 11 digs. He also had four aces.
  • Graduate middle blocker Austin Wilmot (Valley Village, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS/UC Irvine) had seven kills, three blocks and three aces.
  • Graduate libero Spencer Wickens (Irondequoit, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS) had nine digs.
PLAY BY PLAY
 
Pepperdine led for nearly the entire first set but couldn't make it hold up. The Waves went up by as many as five, first at 10-5 and later at 18-13. BYU, however, went on a 6-1 run to tie it at 19. Pepperdine took a two-point lead at 21-19 after a Dvorak ace, and had two set points at 24-22, but the Cougars evened it up again. BYU took its first lead of the set at 27-26. Tied at 30, the Cougars got a kill and then won the set after a Pepperdine attack error.
 
BYU carried its momentum into the second set and went up by four at 9-5 and five at 13-8. Pepperdine chipped away at the lead, and a 4-0 run that included a Wilmot ace put Pepperdine up for the first time at 20-18. Back-to-back kills by Steele made it 23-19, and the Waves eventually evened up the match at one set apiece on a Cougar hitting error.
 
Pepperdine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set after two Dvorak aces. BYU bounced back and went up by three at 8-5 and four at 10-6. A 3-0 run capped off by another Dvorak ace made it 12-12, but the Cougars scored three straight points to go up 15-12, and then had another four-point lead at 18-14. But after a timeout, Pepperdine went on a 6-0 run as Jasper had two aces and a kill. That put Pepperdine up 20-18. Senior outside hitter Ben Weinberg (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) had an ace to make it 23-19, and the Waves would go up 2-1 after a BYU attack error ended the set.
 
BYU took a 7-1 lead in the fourth set, but Pepperdine rallied to tie it at nine. A 4-0 run that featured two consecutive blocks by Jasper and sophomore middle blocker Andersen Fuller (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius HS) made it 15-12 in Pepperdine's favor. The Cougars turned it around again, going up three at 19-16. BYU had four set points at 24-20 but the Waves fought them all off, with a block by Fuller and Jasper, and then kills by both of those players, to extend the set. Pepperdine had a couple of match points and at 29-28 had a couple of swings to end it. But BYU survived and scored the final three points of the set on a block, an ace and a block, to make it 2-2.
 
BYU scored the first two points of the fifth set and never trailed. Pepperdine evened it at two, but the Cougars scored the next three points to go ahead 5-2. The lead grew to 10-4. Jasper had a kill and an ace to get Pepperdine within four points, but that Waves would get no closer as BYU finished off the match.
