MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team could not mount a comeback against San Diego, falling 6-3 in the finale of the opening West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (10-8, 1-2) out hit the Toreros (11-7, 2-1) 10 to eight, but a big third inning for San Diego and a home run in the top of the ninth inning secured the series win.
BIG WAVES
- Junior designated hitter Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) went 3-for-3, which is a career high of three hits. Landis had a double and one RBI.
- Junior catcher Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits including a double and an RBI.
GAME RECAP
After a quick first and second inning, the Toreros opened up the scoring with five runs in the top of the third inning to take an early 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) led off with a walk. With one out, Johnson hit a double to left center and got the Waves their first run of the game to make it 5-1. Landis followed Johnson and roped an RBI double to center field, giving Pepperdine its second run.
No runs were scored between the fifth and eighth innings. In the top of the ninth inning, the Toreros added to their lead with a solo home run to left to make it 6-2. The Waves led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk by Landis. After one out,
Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) singled to right field, advancing Landis to second. With two outs, Peck hit an RBI double, scoring Landis and moving Sheehan to second to make it 6-3. San Diego recorded the final out on a ground ball to the first baseman and collected the series win.
