Waves Collect Win at Loyola Marymount 64-60

LOS ANGELES, California – Four different Waves scored in double-digits as the Pepperdine women's basketball team downed PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount 64-60 on Thursday night inside Gersten Pavilion. 

The Waves (7-9, 3-4) outshot the Lions (7-12, 2-7) with a season best shooting percentage 52.2% to 32.7% throughout the entire game. The Waves outscored LMU 18-10 in the fourth quarter. Pepperdine completed the conference sweep against Loyola Marymount. 

BIG WAVES 
 
  • Freshman Ally Stedman (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) led the Waves with 15 points by shooting 4-for-9 and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the line. She also had three assists and three steals. 
  • Senior Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 13 points by shooting 5-for-9 and had five assists. 
  • Redshirt junior Eve Braslis (Newton, Victoria, Australia/Geelong College/Utah Valley) collected 12 points by shooting 5-for-9. She also brought down six rebounds.
  • Freshman Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) notched 11 points by shooting 5-for-6. She also grabbed seven rebounds.

GAME RECAP 

Bambrick started things off with a three-point bucket and Amosa followed that up with a layup to give the Waves a 5-0 lead early on. The Lions were able to cut the deficit by three at 7-4. A Bambrick jump shot extended the Pepperdine lead at 9-4, but Loyola Marymount made two free throws to get back within two at 9-7. The Lions finished the first quarter with four consecutive points all from free throws to go to the second quarter tied at 11 a piece. 

In the second quarter, the Waves started it off again with a layup thanks to Kendyl Carson (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas HS) to get the lead back at 13-11. The Waves had a five-point scoring run thanks to Braslis and Bambrick to extend the lead to 20-16. The Lions tied it up at 20 apiece, and after back and forth shots by both sides, Amosa had the final basket before the half to get the Waves back ahead at 26-25. 

The Waves came out firing after halftime and went on an eight-point scoring run to extend the margin at 34-25. Loyola Marymount answered back with nine consecutive points to tie the game at 34. Pepperdine and LMU went back and forth, but the Lions had the last four points of the quarter to get the lead at 50-46 heading into the last 10 minutes. 

LMU scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, but the Waves went on another eight-point scoring run to get the lead back at 54-52. The Lions tied it up, but thanks to Bambrick and Stedman the Waves took back the lead at 58-54. The Waves had four consecutive made free throws with one minute left and still held the lead at 64-58. LMU scored the final two points of the game on  free throws. 

STATS 
  • The Lions out rebounded the Waves 30-29. 
  • Pepperdine had seven blocked shots including five from Becky Obinma (Menifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Christian).
  • LMU forced 14 turnovers compared to Pepperdine's 13.

UP NEXT 

The Waves will head to the Bay Area in order to visit San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 5. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
