WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The Pepperdine men's golf team opened up the Amer Ari Invitational with a score of 10-under on Thursday, but the Waves stand in seventh place after the first round.

Pepperdine shot a 10-under 278 at the par-72 Hapuna Golf Course, with four of the five players in the lineup going under-par. The Waves will head into the second round just five shots out of second place, but 10 shots behind the leader, Arizona State.

PLAYER SCORES

Junior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 13th place after a 4-under 68. He had a total of five birdies on the day, including three in his final nine holes.
Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 23rd after a 3-under 69. Four of his five birdies came in a seven-hole stretch midway through the round, and then he added one more on his final hole.
Junior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied 32nd after a 2-under 70. He recorded four birdies on Thursday.
Senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for 50th after a 1-under 71. He had 17 pars and one birdie.
Senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 78th after a 74. He had five birdies on the day.
Playing as an individual, freshman Ian Maspat (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) is also tied for 78th after a 74. He had three birdies in the first round.

UP NEXT

In round two, Pepperdine will be paired with Arizona State, TCU and Stanford. There is a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. HT / 9:30 a.m. PT.
