LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Pepperdine men's golf team had a strong first round on Sunday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate and stands in second place.

Five of the six Waves at the event shot below-par and the Waves posted an opening score of a 15-under 273 at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. The prestigious event features nine teams in Golfstat's top 35, including the #5 Waves.

PLAYER SCORES

Senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) shot a season-best 5-under 67 and is tied for fourth place. He had a flawless first round with five birdies, four of which came on the front nine.
Playing as an individual, freshman Ian Maspat (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) is also tied for fourth with a 5-under 67, which is also a season best. He had six birdies on the day. Maspat is coming off a victory at The Prestige's individual tournament.
Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 11th after a 4-under 68. After a bogey on the first hole, he had no issues the rest of the way and notched five birdies, including two in the final three holes.
Senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is also tied for 11th with a 4-under 68. His round included five birdies, two on the first two holes and two in the final three holes.
Junior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 29th after a 2-under 70. He had six birdies on the day.
Junior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 70th after a 75. He had four birdies, three of which came in the final five holes.

UP NEXT

Pepperdine will be paired with Oklahoma and Florida for Monday's round two. They'll start on the first tee beginning at 10:40 a.m.
