Baseball Drops Second Tourney Game in Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped its second game in a row at the Kleberg Bank College Classic, falling 5-2 to Wichita State on Saturday.

The Waves (4-2) were inches away from hitting go-ahead three-run home runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, but in both cases, the Wichita State (1-6) right fielder caught the ball right at the wall.

BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore designated hitter Nolan Lingley (Tracy, Calif./Ripon Christian School) went 2-for-4.
  • Junior righthander Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal HS) went 5.0 innings in relief and struck out six batters while giving up just one run.
GAME RECAP

Wichita State got the scoring underway with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning. The Waves came back with one run in the bottom of the frame. Lingley had a one-out single, but was put out when junior outfielder Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) reached on a fielder's choice. Landis advanced to second on an error, to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.

Wichita State plated its third run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run.

Lingley's second hit came in the bottom of the seventh. Landis walked, and then with two outs, senior third baseman Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) hit a ball to the right-field wall that was caught to end the threat. Similarly, in the bottom of the eighth, with runners on first and second and one out, sophomore pinch-hitter Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) drove one deep to right field, but it was again caught at the wall. However, sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) advanced to third on the play, and he would score on a balk to make it 3-2.

A two-out, two-RBI triple gave the Shockers two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and the Waves were set down in order to end the game.
