MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's golf team plays its second spring tournament next week but won't go far, as the Waves will head south to Long Beach State's Gold Rush.
EVENT INFO — The Gold Rush will be held at the par-72, 6,183-yard Old Ranch Country Club, located in Seal Beach, California. It's a two-day event with 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday (Feb. 28-March 1). There will be live scoring on Golfstat.
FIELD — In addition to Pepperdine, the 12-team field includes host Long Beach State, Cal State San Marcos, CSUN, Fresno State, Hawai'i, New Mexico State, Northern Illinois, Sam Houston, UCLA, USC and Wyoming.
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves' lineup consists of sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia), freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.), sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.), junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) and freshman Milla Sagel (Bielefeld, Germany). Also, graduate student Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom) and freshman KaYee Kwok (Tianjin, China) will compete as individuals.
EVENT HISTORY — This is Pepperdine's first appearance at the Gold Rush, which began in 2011.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS — Kaleiya Romero won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational for her first college victory. She shot a 10-under 206, tying the fourth-best score in program history, and defeated BYU's Lila Galeai on the first hole of a playoff. Romero was named the WCC's Player of the Month for September ... Lauren Gomez turned in the Waves' second and third top-10 performances of the season at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (T-10th) and the Stanford Invitational (T-7th).
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
