CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Another late-inning comeback wasn't in the cards for the Pepperdine baseball team as the Waves threatened in the ninth inning, but ended up dropping their first game of the season, 3-1, to Iowa in the opening contest of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday.
The Waves (4-1) scored their only run in the top of the ninth and had the tying run on base before the Hawkeyes (4-0) got the final out.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) had two of the Waves' four hits and drove in Pepperdine's only run.
- Freshman infielder Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) had a pinch-hit double for his first college hit.
- Sophomore right-hander Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) started and went 5.2 innings, striking out three while allowing six hits and two runs in the loss.
- Junior left-hander Tyler Murrah (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief.
GAME RECAP
Pepperdine's first hit came in the top of the third on a single by sophomore designated hitter
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS), but the Waves couldn't take advantage. Iowa countered with its first run in the bottom of the third inning after a one-out walk, a stolen base and an RBI single. The Hawkeyes got another run in the sixth inning.
Iowa starter Adam Mazur (who struck out nine in 7.2 scoreless innings) retired 10 straight batters before the Waves opened up the seventh with a walk. After an out, Bradshaw singled to put two runners on base. But a double play ended the Waves' threat. Iowa's third run came in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out triple and RBI single.
The Waves threatened again in the eighth on Rebrook's one-out double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there. In the ninth, the Waves' first two batters reached base via a hit by pitch and a walk. A flyout advanced sophomore shortstop
John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) to third base, and he was brought home on Bradshaw's RBI single for Pepperdine's first run. But with runners on the corners and one out, the next two hitters struck out to end the contest.
