Waves Suffer Loss to Gonzaga on the Road

SPOKANE, Washington – The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell to Gonzaga 85-41 in the McCarthey Athletics Center on Thursday night.
 
The Waves (8-15, 4-10) scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but that wasn't enough as the Bulldogs (23-6, 14-2) outscored Pepperdine in each quarter.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Sophomore forward Kendyl Carson (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas HS) had nine points by shooting 3-for-4 and a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. She also had three assists.
  • Senior guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) also banked nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) collected seven points by shooting 3-for-6.
  • Sophomore forward Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) tied her season high of seven rebounds.
 
GAME RECAP
 
Gonzaga came out and scored the first 10 points of the game. Ally Stedman (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) hit a bucket, but the Zags followed it up with one of their own. Nwaba answered the Bulldogs basket with a layup, but another nine-point scoring run put Gonzaga up 21-4. Amosa scored a jump shot with under 30 seconds left, but the Zags made a shot to hold the lead at 23-6 going into the second quarter.
 
There were another 10 straight points for the Bulldogs to start the second quarter, before Friend made a shot to make it 33-8. The Waves and Zags went back and forth including back-to-back three-pointers from Carson, but the Bulldogs still led 38-14. Pepperdine had the last basket of the second quarter thanks to Amosa, but Gonzaga went into the half with the lead at 40-18.
 
In the third quarter, Amosa hit the first basket, but the Zags had another nine consecutive points to extend their lead at 49-20. After shots from both sides, Gonzaga scored four straight free throws to increase the lead at 60-25. Stedman hit one free throw, but the Zags answered back with a layup to make it 62-26 heading into the final frame.
 
The Bulldogs hit one from long-range to go up 65-26 and Friend answered back with a fastbreak layup. Gonzaga went on another six-point scoring run to extend the lead at 71-28. Pepperdine and the Zags went back and forth for five minutes, but that wasn't enough for the Waves as the Bulldogs collected the win.

  • The Bulldogs outshot the Waves 48.5% to 31.5%.
  • Gonzaga forced 15 turnovers compared to Pepperdine's seven.
  • The Waves had five blocked shots compared to the Bulldogs' four.
  • Pepperdine had eight fast break points to Gonzaga's six.
  • The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Waves' 48-27.

Pepperdine will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a visit to Portland. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
