Amosa Collects Career-High Rebounds in Loss to Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon –  Meaali'i Amosa of the Pepperdine women's basketball team collected a career-high 13 rebounds as the Waves dropped the regular-season finale against Portland 85-49 in the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Waves (8-16, 4-11) outscored the Pilots (18-9, 8-7) in the third quarter 14-10, but that wasn't enough as Portland outscored Pepperdine in the other three quarters.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS/Los Angeles Trade-Tech) led the way with a season-high 16 points by shooting 7-for-11.
  • Senior Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 10 points.
  • Sophomore Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) had eight points by shooting 4-for-5. She also grabbed five rebounds.
  • Freshman Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) had a career-high 13 rebounds.
GAME RECAP
 
Portland started the game with 13 straight points. Nwaba scored the first basket for the Waves. The Pilots hit a three-pointer, and Nwaba answered back with another layup, but Portland still held the lead at 16-4. Another five-point scoring run for the Pilots had them up at 21-4.
 
Ally Stedman (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but Portland was still ahead at 29-11. The Waves and Pilots went back and forth throughout the second quarter, but Portland still held its lead at 50-28 going into the half.
 
In the third quarter, the Pilots scored six consecutive points, but the Waves countered with a 12-point scoring run, six of them by Givens, to make it 56-40. Portland hit a layup and Nwaba answered back with a layup of her own. The Pilots hit the last bucket to extend the lead to 60-42 to head into the final quarter.
 
In the final frame, Becky Obinma (Menifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Christian) hit the first basket to make it 60-44. The Pilots later went on their longest scoring run of the game at 18-points to go up 81-46. The Waves scored three points thanks to a Bambrick layup and a Givens free throw, but Portland scored the last four points of the game on free throws to collect the win.

  • Portland outshot Pepperdine 43.1% to 37.9%.
  • The Pilots forced 24 turnovers compared to the Waves' 14.
  • Portland out-rebounded Pepperdine 44-40.
 
UP NEXT
 
Pepperdine will head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the West Coast Conference Tournament, which will begin on Thursday, March 3. The Waves' seeding and opponent will be announced by the WCC on Sunday.
