Johnson Hits Grand Slam in Waves' Comeback Victory

MALIBU, California – Ryan Johnson hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Pepperdine baseball team rolled Villanova in game two of the season-opening series 6-4.
 
The Waves (2-0) had a total of seven hits, of which four came in the bottom of the eighth, to the Wildcats' (0-2) four hits.


BIG WAVES
 
  • Sophomore infielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) went 2-for-3 and crossed the plate twice.
  • Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits and one RBI.
  • Junior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) hit a grand slam to give the Waves the lead.
  • Sophomore RHP Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) threw 6.0 only giving up one hit and struck out four hitters.
  • Senior RHP Jack Baird (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) threw 2.0 innings, giving up two hits.
  • Senior LHP Grant Georges (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) pitched in the ninth inning only giving up one hit and struck out two batters to earn the save.
 
GAME RECAP
 
The Wildcats got on top first with a home run to left center and the Waves scored the tying run in the bottom of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly to left field by Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep).
 
After four hitless innings, Villanova hit a three-run blast to left field in the eighth inning to take the lead 4-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Masino singled to center field with one out and Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) reached on a fielder's choice. Conley singled to right field to load the bases for Peck. Peck hit a left-field single, scoring one run, which kept the bases loaded. With two outs, Johnson had a 1-1 count and hit the go-ahead grand slam to give the Waves the lead at 6-4 and complete the comeback.
 
Georges came in at the top of the ninth inning to collect the save and give Baird his first win of the season.
 
UP NEXT
 
Pepperdine and Villanova close out the series on Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
