Pepperdine Completes Sweep Over Villanova

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team completed an opening-season series sweep against Villanova on Sunday, defeating the Wildcats 10-7.
 
The Waves (3-0) compiled 16 hits compared to the Wildcats' (0-3) six hits, of which their first hit came in the top of the fifth inning.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Senior infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Junior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
  • Freshman Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Graduate student outfielder Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) had two hits including a double.
  • Graduate student RHP Dane Morrow (Malibu, Calif./Oaks Christian) threw 5.0 innings giving up only two hits. He struck out seven hitters and collected his first win of the season.
 
GAME RECAP
 
Pepperdine's bats continued to stay hot after yesterday, opening the game with four hits and  taking an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Walczykowski and Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, the Waves tacked on another three runs and four hits, including a two-run single by Bradshaw extending the lead to 5-0. After another hitless and scoreless inning for the Wildcats in the top of the third, the Waves tacked on one more run to go up 6-0. The Waves faced four batters in the top of the fourth inning and shut the Wildcats down. Johnson doubled down the left-field line and scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 7-0 after four innings.
 
In the top of the fifth, Villanova had its first two hits and two runs crossed the plate, but Pepperdine still held the lead at 7-2. The Waves answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-2. The Wildcats scored another run on a single to left field in the sixth. The seventh inning was big for t as they collected four runs on three hits to get within three at 9-7. The Waves had three hits in the seventh inning, but were unable to bring anyone home.
 
Villanova loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but the Waves got out of the inning without giving up any runs. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Malinchak hit a double to right field with two outs to get the rally going. Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian) got on base by a Villanova error, which ultimately scored Malinchak bringing the 10th run in. Tyler Murrah (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) came in at the top of the ninth inning to close it out and collect his first save and the series win for the Waves. 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves will stay local and visit UCLA on Tuesday, Feb. 22 for a midweek matchup. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the PAC-12 Network.
