MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team had the bats going at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Friday, defeating Villanova 13-3 in the series and season opener.
Greg Mehlhaff and
John Peck homered in a five-run second inning to get the Waves off to a good start.
BIG WAVES
- Senior infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) went 4-for-4, including a two-run blast to get the Waves their first two runs of the game. He also hit a double in the eighth inning and crossed the plate four times.
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run on the day. He also had four RBI.
- Senior RHP Trevor Kniskern (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach HS) pitched 5.0 innings and earned the win, giving up just three hits and no runs, while striking out three hitters.
- Junior RHP Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./ Chaparral HS) threw 3.0 innings, giving up two hits. He also struck out three batters.
- Junior LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) threw the ninth inning and only gave up one hit and struck out one hitter.
GAME RECAP
Pepperdine got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning, as Mehlhaff and Peck both hit home runs to take a 5-0 lead. Mehlhaff hit an opposite-field homer over the right-field wall to score the first two, and later on, Peck blasted one to center field for the next three. In the fourth inning, Mehlhaff started it off with a single to left and
Michael Winaker (Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon HS) was walked.
Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) drew a walk as well before the Wildcats had a pitching change.
Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) also drew a walk with the bases loaded bringing Mehlhaff across home plate.
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) and
Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) both walked in the top of the fifth inning. Mehlhaff singled to right field and loaded the bases.
Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) was a pinch hitter for the Waves and got hit by a pitch to send Bradshaw home. Another walk for the Waves, brought another run and Peck hit an RBI single through the left side to score the third run of the inning.
The Waves got it going again in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI by Walczykowski and an RBI single by
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) to extend the lead at 11-1. The Wildcats answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning, but the Waves capitalized on a Villanova error and wild pitch to score two more in the eighth inning to give them an 11-run lead at 13-3.
The Waves only gave up one hit in the top of the ninth inning and Mehlhaff closed the game out with a ground ball force out at third base.
