MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's golf team begins its spring season next week against an impressive field at the Lamkin Invitational. It's the first of four tournaments before the West Coast Conference Championships.
EVENT INFO — The Lamkin Invitational will be held at the par-72, 6,329-yard Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.. It's a two-day event with 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday (Feb. 14-15). Both days will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The Waves will be paired with Arizona State and Ole Miss on Monday. There will be live scoring on Golfstat.
FIELD — In addition to Pepperdine, the 14-team field includes host San Diego State, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Kansas, Ole Miss, Oregon, San Jose State, Stanford, Texas, UCLA and USC. Nine of the teams are ranked in the top 25.
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves' lineup consists of freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.), sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.), sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia), junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) and graduate student Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom).
EVENT HISTORY — This is Pepperdine's sixth appearance at this tournament. The Waves' best finish was third in 2013 and 2017. They finished fifth their last time there in 2019. The previous four times the Waves went, it was a match-play event.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS — Kaleiya Romero won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational for her first college victory. She shot a 10-under 206, tying the fourth-best score in program history, and defeated BYU's Lila Galeai on the first hole of a playoff. Romero was named the WCC's Player of the Month for September ... Lauren Gomez turned in the Waves' second and third top-10 performances of the season at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (T-10th) and the Stanford Invitational (T-7th).
WCC — In a remarkably close WCC preseason coaches poll, Pepperdine and Gonzaga tied for the top spot while BYU finished just one point behind ... Reese Guzman and Lion Higo made the preseason All-WCC team.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
