MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team collected a 71-52 win in the home opener against Concordia on Tuesday night.
The Waves (2-3) outscored the Golden Eagles (2-3) in three out of the four quarters. Pepperdine notched 20 points in each the first and final frame to propel them for the win. The Waves outshot CUI 41.9% to 34.3%.
BIG WAVES
- Graduate student Marly Walls (Bardstown, Ky./Nelson County HS/Bucknell) led the way with 17 points and brought down six rebounds. She also dished a team-high seven assists.
- Graduate student Theresa Grace Mbanefo (Otsego, Minn./Blaine HS/Cornell) collected 15 points and nabbed six rebounds.
- Junior Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.
- Sophomore Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) had a double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds and put up 10 points.
GAME RECAP
Concordia opened up the game with back-to-back layups, but the Waves answered with four straight points of their own thanks to Mbanefo. The Golden Eagles again put up a pair of layups to take an 11-9 lead, but a six-point scoring run for the Waves had them back in the lead at 15-11. Pepperdine rounded out the quarter with five consecutive points thanks to Amosa and Mbanefo to extend the Waves' advantage at 20-12.
The Waves went on a six-point scoring run to start the second quarter to make it 26-12. Pepperdine had the longest scoring run of the game with 12 points to extend the margin 38-14. Walls drew a foul with less than 10 seconds left before the half and banked a free throw to make it 39-19 heading into the break.
Following the break, CUI scored the first two baskets to cut the deficit to 39-23. Pepperdine hit two shots of their own to increase the margin to 20 at 43-23. After exchanging baskets, the Golden Eagles went on a six-point scoring run to make it 46-34. Pepperdine and Concordia went back and forth on shots, although CUI made the last bucket at the buzzer to put the score at 51-40.
In the final frame, the Waves had their second longest scoring run with 11 straight points to extend the lead by 19, at 65-46. CUI then scored a bucket before six consecutive points for Pepperdine increased the lead to 71-48. The Golden Eagles made the final two baskets and then missed a three-pointer, allowing
KK Brodie (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS) to pull down the rebound and collect the win.

- The Waves out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 55-36.
- CUI forced 19 turnovers compared to Pepperdine's five.
- There were three lead changes and the Waves and Golden Eagles were tied four times.
NOTABLE
- Sophomore Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) had a career-high six rebounds.
- Redshirt sophomore Rosemary Odebunmi (Ado-Tkiti, Nigeria/Sierra Canyon HS) also had a career high in rebounds with four.
- Brodie brought down a season-high five rebounds.
