Pepperdine Nearly Makes a Comeback Against #19 BYU Falling 4-3

MALIBU, Calif.  – Tatum Wynalda scored two goals and earned a penalty kick for a third, but the Pepperdine women's soccer team fell short to #19 BYU 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.

The Waves (7-3-4, 1-2-2 WCC) fell behind 3-0 in the first half to the Cougars (7-2-5, 3-0-2 WCC) but came out hot in the second half. Pepperdine nearly made the comeback after scoring two goals right after the break, but BYU tacked on one more to put them up by two before Wynalda scored in the final 10 seconds of the game.

Despite being outshot 23-7, the Waves had other excellent chances, and hit the post twice.

GOALS

BYU 18': Olivia Smith of BYU made a move around a Waves defender and chipped a right-footed shot off the crossbar into the back of the net.

BYU 27': The Cougars' Jamie Shepherd received a pass and sent a shot from about 20 yards out that had a one-hop bounce into the goal.

BYU 40': BYU sent a cross toward the box and as the Waves' keeper went to collect the ball, the Cougars' Allie Fryer beat her to it and sent a right-footed shot into the net.

Pepperdine 47': Freshman forward Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) drew a foul right inside the box in front of the Cougars' keeper and was awarded a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Carlee Giammona (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS/Alabama) took the kick and found the back of the net. This was Giammona's sixth goal of the season.

Pepperdine 62': Senior defender Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./Point Loma HS) kicked the ball from the defensive side of the field to Giammona. As Giammona settled down the ball, she sent an upwards pass behind her over a BYU defender right in front of Wynalda. Wynalda then made a move through two Cougars, passed the ball behind herself to her left foot, and after four dribbles went one-on-one with the goalkeeper before shooting a rocket to the bottom back corner of the goal. This was Wynalda's seventh goal of the season.

BYU 67': BYU brought the ball into the offensive zone and Cougars' Allie Fryer ripped a shot from about 15 yards out into the back of the goal.

Pepperdine 90': BYU tried to clear the ball out of its zone, but freshman midfielder Karina Gonzalez (Sanger, Calif./Hallmark Charter School and Sanger HS) intercepted the pass. Gonzalez tried to make a pass, and though it went to a Cougars' defender, Wynalda was able to take it off her feet. Wynalda made two short moves and fired a rocket from about 30 yards out past the BYU keeper. This was Wynalda's eighth goal of the season.
