Women's Basketball Falls to Pacific on the Road

STOCKTON, California –  Becky Obinma of the Pepperdine women's basketball team had a career-high 15 points in Saturday's 65-58 loss to Pacific.

The Tigers (4-10, 1-2) outshot the Waves (4-8, 0-3) 40.4% to 36.9%. 

BIG WAVES
  • Becky Obinma (Menifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Chrisitan) had a career-high 15 points by shooting 6-for-13. She also had one assist, two blocked shots and brought down eight rebounds. 
  • Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS/Los Angeles Trade-Tech) had 11 points, five assists and two steals. 
  • Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) banked 11 points, had two assists and grabbed nine rebounds. 
  • Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) collected nine points and had career-highs in rebounds with 10 and steals with two. She led the Waves in rebounds. 

GAME RECAP

The Tigers started the game with a six-point scoring run, but the Waves answered right back with a five-point scoring run of their own. After back-and-forth shots, Pepperdine went on another five-point scoring run to tie the game 12-12. Pacific had four free throws in a row and rounded out the first 10 minutes of the game with a 18-15 lead. 

In the second quarter, the Waves took the lead for the first time, 19-18 after back-to-back layups from Givens and Jayla-Ruffus-Milner. The Tigers went on another six-point scoring run to get the lead back at 28-23. Pepperdine went on a seven-point scoring run to take the lead back again at 30-28, but Pacific got the last bucket before the half ended and the teams went into the break tied at 30 apiece. 

Pepperdine scored the first basket of the third quarter, but Pacific took the lead back after two free throws and a layup. The Waves had their largest scoring run of eight, as they went ahead 40-34. Back-to-back jumpers from the Tigers had them within two at 40-38. Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) made two free throws, but Pacific hit a three-point shot to end the third with the Waves holding a one-point lead 42-41. 

The Tigers made two free throws to get the lead at 43-42 at the start of the fourth quarter. Jayla Ruffus-Milner gave the Waves a one-point lead, but Pacific scored a basket from long range to go up 45-44. Another lead change went in favor of the Waves as they went up by two thanks to Givens and Jayla Ruffus-Milner. The Tigers took the lead at 50-47 and the Waves were able to get the game back within one at 50-49. The Tigers took the final lead and ended the final frame with a seven-point margin.

STATS 
  • Pepperdine out-rebound Pacific 46-32.
  • The Waves had more points in the paint than the Tigers 44-26. 
  • Pepperdine had five blocks compared to Pacific's three. 
  • Pacific forced 19 turnovers compared to Pepperdine's 17. 
  • The Waves had 12 steals. 

UP NEXT 

The Waves will be back home to host PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (Jan. 25). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on the WCC Network.
